First Aid refresher course
First aid certificates (unit of competency HLTAID011 Provide First Aid) expire after 3 years (36 months). Refresher courses are available to those that want to be recertified after their first aid certificate expired. The training will bring the skills and knowledge you gained previously up-to-date with recent changes in legislation, best practices etc. You will also need to demonstrate the correct administration of CPR, recovery positions on a training mannequin and use of AEDs.
You will be issued with new nationally recognised Statement of Attainments for the following units of competencies after completing the refresher course:
- HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
CPR refresher
CPR certificates expire every 12 months, and you must keep CPR up-to-date for your first aid certificate to remain valid. You can complete CPR refresher courses twice to extend the validity of your first aid certificate to the full 3 years.
What is the difference between a first aid refresher and full course?
Some registered training organisations (RTOs) will have an express option for the theory, but you must still successfully complete the full assessment according to the training package. You must have successfully completed and hold an existing first aid certificate to book an express refresher course.
Why do I need to refresh my first aid and CPR certificates?
While Vocational Education & Training (VET) courses don’t expire, there are good reasons for requiring mandatory first aid training refreshers:
- You are more confident in using skills learned recently
- Practice makes perfect! Your judgement and skills will improve when regularly practising and refreshing your knowledge
- Industry recommendations and best practices can change over time, refresher courses keep you at the forefront of these changes
